Our Approach
We at the Cricket Island Foundation believe that youth led social change programs and the methods they employ are effective strategies for achieving positive youth development. These programs honor the relationship between individuals, communities and society. In order to foster postive youth development, we use a social change approach to grantmaking that mirrors our grantees' efforts; by building a strong base at the local level, we can create a national movement one community at a time. Our approach includes the following key components:
- Creating opportunities for youth leaders to participate in all aspects of their local youth led social change organizations. We require that our grantees engage youth leaders in all aspects of professional development and technical assistance.
- Building the capacity of youth led social change organizations so that they become strong viable organizations within their communities. We provide general operating support and capacity building grants, as well as peer-to-peer and peer-to-foundation learning opportunities.
- Working in local communities to increase awareness and value of youth led social change organizations. We facilitate learning opportunities for organizations to work on shared issues, and create partnerships with local funders to work collaboratively in supporting our grantees.
- Developing alliances with local and national funders that supports the work of youth led social change organizations. Within the field of youth led social change and youth development, we network with funders, share our successes and challenges, and present our work at conferences and workshops.
- Increasing the visibility of youth led social change organizations that illustrate the value of their work in the field of positive youth development. We help youth led social change organizations advocate for themselves, partner with other youth led social change organizations and foundations, and document and disseminate the positive learning experiences and practices of youth led social change programming.
